What is coated tablecloth fabric?

Coated tablecloth fabric is a woven table fabric with a protective surface layer that makes it easier to wipe clean. In this quality, the base is usually polyester and the coating is commonly PVC. The coating helps protect the surface against light spills and everyday dirt, while the textile base gives the fabric structure.

This fabric is mainly used for tablecloths and other flat table coverings. Its exact look and feel depend on the base fabric, coating type and finish.

Properties of the fabric

Coated tablecloth fabric has a stable woven base with a coated or wipe-clean surface. The coating can make the fabric smoother, firmer or slightly more structured than an untreated woven fabric. It also helps liquid and dirt stay more on the surface, so the fabric can often be cleaned with a damp cloth.

The fabric usually has little to no stretch and is easy to cut as a stable woven material. Some coated qualities can be sensitive to high heat, sharp folds or visible needle marks. The coating may reduce drape slightly, which helps the fabric lie neatly on a table.

Care instructions

  • Wipe the surface clean with a damp cloth after use.
  • Wash only when the care label allows it, usually at low temperature.
  • Avoid bleach and harsh cleaning agents, because they can affect the coating.
  • Air drying is preferred to protect the coated surface.
  • Iron only from the reverse side at low temperature, if the care label allows it.

  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 may be available depending on the specific article.

Practical tip

Store coated tablecloth fabric rolled rather than sharply folded when possible. Hard creases, high heat and strong pressure can leave marks in the coated surface.
