GOTS vs OEKO-TEX® explained

GOTS and OEKO-TEX® are two well-known textile certifications, but they do not mean the same thing. GOTS focuses on textiles made with certified organic fibres and includes environmental and social criteria across the supply chain. OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 focuses on textile safety by testing textile products for harmful substances.

That means a fabric with OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is not automatically organic. A GOTS-certified fabric, on the other hand, must meet organic fibre requirements as well as processing, environmental and social criteria. Both labels can be valuable, but they answer different questions.

Why the difference matters

Certification helps you understand what has been checked, but the label type matters. One certificate may say something about fibre origin, while another may say something about product safety or chemical testing.

For fabric selection, this is especially important when working with baby clothing, children’s garments, skin-contact products or collections with sustainability requirements. Always check the certificate per article, because not every fabric in the same fabric group carries the same certification.

GOTS

GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard. It is a textile processing standard for organic fibres, supported by independent certification, and includes ecological and social criteria. GOTS covers more than the fibre alone: it also includes processing stages, traceability, environmental requirements and human-rights and social criteria.

  • GOTS licence or certificate number
  • Scope of certification
  • Fibre composition

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is a label for textiles tested for harmful substances. The testing is based on the intended use of the textile, with stricter requirements for products with intensive skin contact or for babies and young children.

Best to check:

  • OEKO-TEX® certificate number
  • Product class
  • Whether the specific article is included
  • Fibre composition
  • Intended use of the fabric

Practical tip

Start with the claim you need to support. Use GOTS when the organic fibre and processing claim matters, and use OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 when tested textile safety is the main requirement.
