Sweatshirt Fabrics

What are sweatshirt fabrics?

Sweatshirt fabrics are a group of knitted fabrics used for sweaters, hoodies, jogging trousers and relaxed garments. They are not one single fabric type, but a category that includes different constructions such as jogging fabric, French terry, terry crepe and rib jacquard. These fabrics are usually selected for comfort, warmth, structure and flexibility.

Because this category includes several fabric types, the surface and inside can differ strongly. Some sweatshirt fabrics have a smooth front and looped back, while others are brushed, textured or ribbed with a jacquard pattern.

Properties of the fabrics

Most sweatshirt fabrics are knitted, which gives them more flexibility than woven fabrics. Jogging fabric is often soft and stable, making it suitable for comfortable sweaters and trousers. French terry has a smooth front and a looped back, which gives the fabric volume without making it too heavy.

Terry crepe has a more textured or crepe-like surface and can add a less basic look to relaxed garments. Rib jacquard combines rib structure with a knitted-in pattern, giving both stretch and surface texture. The final behaviour depends on the yarn, weight, stretch, inside finish and fibre composition.

Applications

  • Sweaters.
  • Hoodies.
  • Jogging trousers.
  • Zip-up cardigans.
  • Sweatshirt dresses.

Care instructions

  • Wash sweatshirt fabrics usually at 30°C or 40°C, depending on composition and finish.
  • Wash inside out to reduce friction and help protect the surface.
  • Avoid high tumble-drying temperatures, especially when elastane is included.
  • Air drying is preferred to reduce shrinkage and surface wear.
  • Pre-washing is recommended when shrinkage could affect the final size.

Certificates

  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 may be available depending on the specific article.
  • GRS may be available when recycled polyester is used.
  • GOTS may be possible for qualities made from certified organic cotton.

Practical tip

Choose sweatshirt fabrics by construction first, not only by weight. French terry works well for breathable layers, jogging fabric for soft everyday sweats, terry crepe for extra texture and rib jacquard for stretch with a visible knitted pattern.
