What is suede fabric?

Suede fabric is a textile with a soft, brushed surface that looks and feels similar to suede leather. In fabric collections, the term usually refers to imitation suede or faux suede, made from synthetic fibres such as polyester or microfiber. The surface has a short nap, which gives the fabric a matte, velvety appearance.

Suede fabric is valued for its soft touch, warm look and stable surface. It is used for garments and accessories that need a leather-like appearance without the structure or care requirements of real suede leather.

Properties of the fabric

Suede fabric is usually woven or knitted and then brushed, sanded or finished to create a fine nap. This raised surface gives the fabric its soft hand feel and subtle colour depth. Because the fibres lie in one direction, the fabric can show a visible nap direction.

Most suede fabrics have little to moderate stretch, depending on the base construction and whether elastane is included. Polyester suede is often shape-retaining and easy to care for, while microfiber suede can feel finer and smoother. Heavier qualities have more body and are suitable for structured items.

Care instructions

  • Wash suede fabric usually at 30°C on a gentle programme.
  • Wash inside out to help protect the brushed surface.
  • Avoid fabric softener when it affects the surface finish or stretch recovery.
  • Air drying is preferred to protect the nap and reduce creasing.
  • Iron only on the reverse side at low temperature, without pressing the surface flat.

Practical tip

Cut all pattern pieces in the same nap direction to avoid visible shade differences in the finished garment. Test pressing and seam finishing on a leftover piece first, because heat and pressure can flatten the brushed surface.
