What is sequin fabric?

Sequin fabric is a decorative fabric with small shiny discs attached to the surface. These sequins can be stitched, embroidered or fixed onto a woven, knitted or mesh base. The result is a fabric with strong light reflection, movement and a clearly decorative character.

Sequin fabric is mainly used when texture, shine and visual impact are important. Because the surface is embellished, it usually needs more careful cutting, sewing and care than plain fabrics.

Properties of the fabric

Sequin fabric is defined by its embellished surface rather than one fixed construction. The base fabric can be tulle, mesh, jersey, satin or another woven or knitted fabric. Sequins are often arranged in rows, patterns or all-over designs.

The fabric can feel flexible or quite firm depending on the base, sequin density and embroidery technique. Heavily embellished qualities can be heavier, less drapey and more sensitive to snagging. Stretch versions are possible when sequins are applied to a stretch knit or stretch mesh.

Care instructions

  • Wash only when the care label allows it, usually by hand or on a very gentle programme.
  • Turn the fabric or garment inside out to help protect the sequins.
  • Avoid tumble drying, because heat and friction can loosen or damage the sequins.
  • Do not iron directly on the sequins.
  • Dry cleaning may be needed for heavily embellished garments, depending on base fabric and attachment method.

Practical tip

Remove sequins from seam allowances before sewing to reduce bulk and protect the needle. Test stitching first, because sequins can break needles or cause skipped stitches.
