Poplin Fabric

What is poplin fabric?

Poplin is a finely woven fabric with a smooth surface and a subtle crosswise rib. The fabric is known for its clean appearance, crisp hand feel and stable structure. Because of its fine weave, poplin is often used for garments that need a neat finish without becoming too heavy.

Poplin is especially relevant for shirts, blouses, shirt dresses and children’s dresses. It has little natural stretch because it is woven, but cotton blends or elastane versions can add more comfort and easier care.

Properties of the fabric

Poplin is usually woven in a plain weave with a fine rib effect in the width of the fabric. This rib is created by using more and finer warp yarns than weft yarns. The result is a smooth, firm and slightly crisp fabric with a neat surface.

Cotton poplin feels natural and breathable, while cotton-polyester blends usually crease less and are easier to maintain. Poplin is also suitable for prints because the smooth surface helps colours and details appear clear.

  • Lightweight uniforms and workwear shirts.

Care instructions

  • Wash poplin usually at 30 to 40°C, depending on colour, composition and finish.
  • White cotton poplin may sometimes tolerate higher temperatures, but always follow the care label.
  • Wash dark or printed poplin inside out to help protect the colour and surface.
  • Air drying is preferred to reduce creasing and shrinkage.
  • Iron at medium temperature, depending on the fibre content.

Certificates

  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 may be available depending on the specific article.
  • GOTS may be possible for qualities made from certified organic cotton.
  • GRS may be possible when recycled polyester or recycled cotton is used.

Practical tip

Use poplin when a garment needs a smooth surface and a crisp outline. For fitted shirts or children’s dresses, check whether the pattern has enough ease because classic poplin has little natural stretch.
