What is Nicky velours?

Nicky velours is a soft knitted velour fabric with a short pile surface. It has the look and feel of velvet, but because it is knitted, it usually has more stretch and a softer drape than woven velvet. The surface feels smooth and plush, with a subtle sheen that changes slightly with the pile direction.

Nicky velours is often used for comfortable garments that need softness, stretch and a richer surface. It is especially suitable for baby clothing, loungewear, tracksuits, dresses and soft tops.

Properties of the fabric

Nicky velours is a knitted pile fabric. The knitted base gives the fabric flexibility, while the cut pile creates the soft velvety surface. This combination makes the fabric comfortable to wear and easier to move in than many woven pile fabrics.

The fabric can be made from cotton, polyester, viscose or blends, often with elastane for extra stretch and recovery. Like other pile fabrics, Nicky velours has a nap direction, which means the colour and shine can look different depending on how the fabric is cut and viewed.

Care instructions

  • Wash Nicky velours usually at 30°C on a gentle programme.
  • Wash inside out to help protect the pile surface.
  • Avoid bleach and harsh detergents.
  • Air drying is preferred to prevent pile flattening and shrinkage.
  • Iron only on the reverse side at low temperature, without pressing the pile flat.

Practical tip

Cut all pattern pieces in the same pile direction to avoid visible colour differences in the finished garment. Use a stretch needle and test the stitch first, because the knitted base needs seams that can move with the fabric.
