Chiffon

What is chiffon fabric?

Chiffon is a lightweight, sheer woven fabric with a soft, airy appearance. It has a slightly grainy surface and a fluid drape, which gives garments a delicate and elegant look. Because the fabric is transparent, it is often used in layers or combined with a lining.

Chiffon is suitable for designs that need lightness, movement and transparency. It is commonly used for blouses, dresses, overlays, sleeves and scarves.

Properties of the fabric

Chiffon is usually woven in a plain weave with fine, twisted yarns. These yarns create the fabric’s slightly crêpe-like texture and help give it a soft, flowing drape. The fabric is very light and can shift easily during cutting and sewing.

Chiffon can be made from polyester, silk, viscose or blends. Polyester chiffon is common because it is lightweight, stable and easier to care for than silk chiffon. The fabric usually has little to no stretch unless elastane is added.

Applications

  • Scarves and shawls
  • Evening wear, in multiple layers
  • Sheer curtains and net curtains, voile
  • Bridal wear, as an overlay over satin or silk

Hand wash at 30°C or use a delicate programme. Do not wring. Hang to dry on a drying rack. Iron on the inside at a low temperature, using the silk setting.

Certifications

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 available.

Practical Tip

Chiffon and voile can be difficult to sew because of their smooth surface. Use fine needles, size 70–80, sew slowly and place silk paper or tissue paper under the fabric to prevent the sewing machine from pulling the fabric in.
