What is Aloba?

Aloba is a soft knitted fabric with a suede-like surface. The fabric has a short, brushed or velvety surface that gives it a smooth hand feel and a slightly matte appearance. Because Aloba is usually made from polyester, it is lightweight, flexible and relatively easy to care for.

Aloba is often used as a textile alternative to suede or velvet-look fabrics. It is popular for costumes, decorative clothing, hobby projects and soft interior applications. The fabric has a pleasant drape, but is generally less structured than woven upholstery fabrics.

Properties of the fabric

Aloba is usually made with a knitted base and a short brushed or velvety surface. The knitted structure gives the fabric some flexibility, while the surface finish creates the soft suede-like touch. The fabric can have a visible nap direction, which means the colour and shine may change depending on how the fabric is cut and viewed.

Polyester Aloba is generally stable, lightweight and shape-retaining. It has a pleasant drape, but it is usually less structured than woven upholstery fabrics. The brushed surface can flatten under high heat or strong pressure, so careful pressing is important.

Care instructions

  • Wash Aloba usually at 30°C on a gentle programme, depending on the care label.
  • Wash inside out to help protect the brushed surface.
  • Avoid high tumble-drying temperatures, because heat can flatten or damage the nap.
  • Iron only on the reverse side at low temperature, without pressing the surface flat.
  • Cut all pattern pieces in the same nap direction to avoid visible shade differences.

Certifications

  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 may be available depending on the specific article. For children’s costumes or baby-related applications, always check the certification and class per fabric.

Pay attention to the direction of the surface when cutting Alova. Pattern pieces should be placed in the same direction to avoid visible shade differences in the finished product.
